Body-protected areas in GP clinics and medical centres

In a GP clinic, the rooms where mains-powered equipment is applied to the patient (treatment and procedure rooms, and consult rooms used for ECGs or ultrasound) are patient areas. Rooms used only for talking and examination often aren’t.

Usually patient areas

  • Treatment and procedure rooms
  • Consult rooms where equipment like ECG or ultrasound is used on the patient
  • Minor surgery rooms

Usually not

  • –Consult rooms with no mains equipment applied to the patient
  • –Reception, waiting and offices
  • –Vaccine fridge and storage areas (they need their own protected circuit, but aren’t patient areas)

Each room’s classification is the practice’s decision, based on how it will be used, with input from clinicians, equipment suppliers and the electrician.

Plan before the walls close

  • Decide room by room how each will be used, before rough-in
  • Allow for future equipment in consult rooms that may become treatment rooms
  • Vaccine fridges on their own dedicated circuit
