Body-protected areas in dental practices

Dental surgeries are among the rooms most commonly classified as body-protected, because mains-powered equipment like the chair, handpieces and intra-oral X-ray is used on the patient.

Usually patient areas

  • Surgeries and treatment rooms
  • OPG and CBCT imaging rooms
  • Hygiene and oral health therapy rooms

Usually not

  • –Reception and waiting areas
  • –Sterilisation room (power and dedicated circuits, but usually not a patient area)
  • –Staff and plant rooms

Each room’s classification is the practice’s decision, based on how it will be used, with input from clinicians, equipment suppliers and the electrician.

Plan before the walls close

  • Each chair’s supply sized to the supplier’s spec sheet
  • Dedicated circuits for imaging and sterilisers
  • Switchboard space for the 10 mA RCDs
  • Cleaners’ outlets away from the clinical circuits
