Body-protected areas in Queensland

In Queensland, the licensed electrical contractor tests the installation work and gives you a certificate of testing and compliance confirming it’s electrically safe and meets the wiring rules and any other applicable standard.

Your contractor tests and certifies

Who certifiesThe licensed electrical contractor, on a ‘certificate of testing and compliance’ for electrical installation work.
RecordsThe contractor must keep a copy of the certificate for five years. Keep yours with your compliance files.
Independent inspectionAsk the Electrical Safety Office whether anything further applies to your project. Victoria’s separate prescribed inspection for patient areas is specific to Victoria.
StandardAS/NZS 3003 applies to the patient areas themselves, as it does across Australia.

What to do as the practice

  • Tell your electrician which rooms are patient areas and how each will be used.
  • Get the certificate of testing and compliance and the AS/NZS 3003 test results at handover.
  • Book the retest within 12 months, and before any alterations.

Testing, everywhere

AS/NZS 3003 requires routine inspection and testing of body-protected areas at intervals not exceeding 12 months. The date of the last test goes on the label at the door.
